Hundreds protest Redskins name outside Metrodome

Posted: Updated:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Hundreds of American Indians and their supporters in Minneapolis are calling for the Washington Redskins to change the team's name.

A crowd of men, women and children rallied outside the Metrodome before the Minnesota Vikings played Washington Thursday night.

Opponents call the Redskins' nickname offensive to Native Americans. As drums beat, protesters carried signs saying "We are not cartoons! Respect us!" and chanted, "Hey hey, ho ho, Little Red Sambo's got to go."

Mario McBrogan of Minneapolis, who is Cherokee, was there to watch the game and to support changing the Redskins' name. He says the name should be changed "out of respect to every Native American."

Redskins owner Dan Synder has called the name a "badge of honor" and said it won't be changed.
