Hermosa teacher using a tangible approach to teaching

A few years ago, Hermosa middle school teacher Mary Smith asked students how many of them had been fishing.

After no one responded, she decided to get her classes reconnected with the outdoors.

All thirty–eight middle school students at the Hermosa school are now in a class called "camp," where Cabela's employees offer workshops to teach kids about the great outdoors.

Seventh grader Brandon Quinn says "camp" is his favorite class.

"After the classes, I really want to go outside and scout out areas and try some of the stuff I learned like the homemade filters for water," he said.

The teacher says some of the things the students are learning from Cabela's employees are the same things they would have learned in a textbook.

"I have seen a trend where kids are completely plugged in, and it was a way to reconnect them with the outdoors, connect them with community," Smith said.
