Vineyard, winery breaks ground in Sturgis

KOTA -- Sturgis is getting a new business, and it's not 'rally' related.
In a ground- breaking ceremony Friday, individuals celebrated the new Belle Joli vineyard, located at the entrance of Vanocker Canyon.

In this location, grapes will be grown to make champagne.

Matthew Jackson, co-owner, says eventually the vines will grow red grapes, but it will take four years until the grapes are ready for production.

"These grapes will last 80 to 100 years, if they're trained and treated properly of commercial production It does take awhile to establish, but that's part of the beauty of it - the waiting for it.

A wine tasting facility will open at the Sturgis location in May.
Heidi Kruse, executive director of the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, says the winery is a great addition to the city.

"I think this will be an incredibly important draw for people outside our area and it's a great asset for the people of Sturgis, having another place to go and visit. Certainly we're working to do things beyond the rally year round, and I think this is going to be an important component of that effort," Kruse said.
