Shawn Cable and Nancy Naeve are co-anchors and friend, but they are also bitter rivals, who bleed their respective colors. They show us what makes their fans the best in South Dakota. Nancy found the ultimate fan.
If you are an University of South Dakota alum, I bet you've met this man, a man I'm always happy to run into in Sioux Falls or in Vermillion. Always. P.J. Maloney is synonymous with USD. His basement has a lot of Yote memorabilia. He graduated from the University in 1959. His trips back to his Alma Mater became much more frequent when his good friend "Smokey" Joe Salem was hired as head coach of Coyote Football in 1966. Since then P.J. has been a prominent and positive fixture in Verm town.
"It's always been a special joy. I mean I never went to a game because I felt I should. I went to a game because I love to go," P.J. said.
He spent 25 years on the Athletic Board of Control which included the Alumni Association. He was inducted to the USD Hall of Fame last year for his unwavering support and tireless hours on several committees and boards.
"I didn't get it because I gave them a million dollars for something. I got it because I stepped up when ever and what ever they needed something. It was a special deal. I'll never forget it," P.J. said.
"He goes back because it's part of who he is. a love shared by his two daughters Kelly and Michelle graduated from the U too. We all went at the same time and every game day, I'd see P.J. at our favorite watering hole Carey's and in the Dome. P.J. loves this showdown," P.J. said.
"I do think the U will win. I believe it will be a close game. I'm just so tickled to have the rivalry back. We've had 50 wins, they've had 49 can't get much closer than that! Go Yotes!"
PJ and I will be sporting our Coyote gear on Saturday. My mom dug up an old T-Shirt from the 80's and I still "HATE STATE" and Love the U. My sign on the gate reads "Beware of Dog" but Shawn, you all better beware of the coyotes. We have spirit yes we do, we have spirit how bout you? GO YOTES!
