The daughter of a woman who died while in the care of the Minnehaha County detox center has filed a lawsuit against the county.
In the lawsuit, she accuses caregivers at the detox center of negligence.
Bethany Karr filed the lawsuit on behalf of her mother, Charleen, who died nearly a year ago last November 18th. In these court documents, it states her mother had called the helpline 211 after she drank about a half cup of rubbing alcohol, along with taking prescription drugs.
And in this lawsuit, Bethany's lawyer's say Charleen was so disabled by the poisonous combination that when she was wheeled into detox in a wheelchair, she was practically unconscious.
It states caregivers failed to act upon the danger signs of an overdose.
And then, it adds they left Karr alone in an observation room, face-down and helpless.
Karr's attorneys say the lack of proper care and failure to follow procedures led to Charleen's death.
Minnehaha County Commission Department Head Ken McFarland told us they were not surprised by the lawsuit.
"We were expecting it, in that we were served with a lawsuit yesterday and we've already forwarded it to our attorneys for handling and for their review," McFarland.
We contacted Karr's lawyers at Nasser Law Offices and they told us they couldn't comment on the lawsuit.
