SDSU, USD food drive showdown brings in more than 17 tons

Feeding South Dakota was the big winner in a weeklong competitionthat matched fans of the state's two NCAA Division I universities in a fooddrive.

The South Dakota Showdown Series Food Driveraised more than 17 tons of food for the state's largest hunger-relieforganization. South Dakota State Universityfans donated 18,747 pounds of food and University of South Dakotasupporters donated 16,613 pounds. The food will provide 29,467 meals.

"Everyoneis a winner as this food will go a long way toward feeding hungry individualsand families during the holiday season," Matt Gassen, Feeding SouthDakota's executive director, said. "We're so grateful to our partners in this driveand to the fans for their impressive generosity."

Throughout the week, fansdeposited food in barrels at nine Hy-Vee grocery stores in Sioux Falls, Brookings and Vermillion. Cashdonations also were accepted during Saturday's Showdown Series football game.

Food will be distributedlocally through food banks and pantries. Items that were collected at Brookingsand Vermillion Hy-Vees will be given out through food pantries operated bylocal churches in those communities.

The driveconcluded after Saturday's football game between the Jackrabbits and Coyotes.SDSU won the game 27-12.
