Hunters donate turkeys for Thanksgiving meal

Posted: Updated:

Thanksgiving often brings together families for a festive fall feast.

But for some, the traditional turkey dinner is only possible because of donations from hunters.

This Thanksgiving hunters are giving those in need a shot at a hot meal.

Hunters usually prefer to be out in the fields.

"A lot of us turkey hunt and you know again we want to do something," said Ron Schauer, a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

And with Thanksgiving right around the corner, this provides the perfect opportunity for them to give back.

"A lot of people think Sportsmen's clubs are just about hunting, fishing, the outdoors, but we try to do other things to give to those in need or help the community out," said Schauer.

Members of the National Wild Turkey Federation, or NWTF, donated dozens of turkeys to The Banquet Tuesday morning.

"Today the National Wild Turkey Federation brought the banquet 32 turkeys that we're going to be able to use for our Thanksgiving meal," said Tamera Jerke-Liesinger, The Banquet's Executive Director.

The Banquet's Executive Director says that will serve about 350 to 375 people.

"Thanksgiving is a time when you shouldn't have to worry about that. It's usually a time for family and celebrating and things like that," said Schauer.

It's become a tradition the NWTF has been a part of for several years and some of the hunters have even come back to serve meals at the Banquet.

"We get a lot out of hunting and giving to others. We just enjoy it. It makes you feel good to give to those that are in need," said Schauer.

"These guys donating these turkeys means the world to us as does any donation that comes up our way. Anything that comes to our doors on Thanksgiving for Thanksgiving meal will be used. And if we have a few extra turkeys, well we'll put those in the freezer and will make a turkey dinner down the road. So everything gets used here at the banquet," said Jerke-Liesinger.

If you would like to make a monetary donation towards meals at The Banquet, please visit Donations will also be accepted at 900 East 8th Street in Sioux Falls.
