Businesses face another year of road construction

Posted: Updated:

Business owners on Russell St. have had a tough road with all of the construction. For the inconveniences they have faced, they're staying pretty positive.

Now, construction season is almost over.

It has been almost a year since Russell St. was free of orange cones.

Roads near Mexican restaurant Casa Del Rey have been closed since it began.

Owner, Don Smith, said, "Our first eight months our business was up, the last couple months it's been about level. It's probably starting to catch up to us a little bit."

Smith thinks business will stay the same when the other side of the road closes.

He said the people in charge of the project have done a great job, "They've really done a great job with traffic being able to flow as good as it can. I'm really happy with the way they're working with it."

That is something the owner of Food-N-Fuel, Vick Pattel, at Russell and Kiwanis agrees with.

"The way the construction project has been handled has just been absolutely fantastic." He said.

Lanes closest to his gas station will be closed next year, but he does not think he will feel an impact.

"The way it's been handled I don't think we should see a huge change with having the lane differential because the traffic flow now is on a wider road so I think the traffic will move a lot smoother." Pattel said.

Even though he said the city has been great and the project has not made much of a difference in his business, he will be glad when it is over.

Pattel continued, "We're seeing a lot of the projects come to an end. Then it makes it, ‘wow it's so nice now.' It's always hard to go through the project, but when it's done and you can see the light through the end of the tunnel, as we can see it here on the southbound lanes, so that's nice."

There is some good news, the city Engineering Department told KSFY News the Russell St. construction is supposed to done be by the time the Event Center opens.
