National Guard and South Dakota tribes discussing partnerships

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE -- The South Dakota National Guard and several Native American tribes are talking about working together on community service projects.

The Guard says the idea is to have soldiers train on the reservations. The result would be improvements to the infrastructure, such as road development, construction services, providing medical care and other types of support that align with the mission of the Guard.

Representatives from the Yankton, Oglala and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribes had an initial meeting with Guard leaders last week in Pierre.
