Many of us are heading to the airport to fly home for the holidays.
But for some people, that airport might not be Sioux Falls.
Many people chose to fly out of Omaha or Minneapolis to save a few bucks.
But the mayor has high hopes to keep travelers flying out of Sioux Falls.
And he believes there are some changes coming to these ticket counters.
Flights out of Sioux Falls can be expensive but Mayor Mike Huether said it's more affordable than it used to be.
"Competition can really spur on lower airfares, improve service, better quality and yes, more flying options," Mayor Huether said.
So what new airline might we see coming to Sioux Falls.
"We're hoping to put together the right package that would entice Southwest to, yes, select Sioux Falls, as one of their flying destinations. The sky is the limit Sioux Falls and South Dakota, and mark my words, we are working on it big time," Mayor Huether said.
But the Mayor believes airline mergers may offer more flight options and lower fares.
"There's a good chance that we'll have the opportunity to have one of our hubs be Charlotte, North Carolina, and if we can make that happen by flying to Sioux Falls to Charlotte, my goodness, that will really make those east coast fares dramatically more competitive," Mayor Huether said.
Peak travel times like hunting season or the holidays can drive up prices.
"But one of the things that's great right now, is that even the size of the planes that are flying in and out of Sioux Falls are getting larger, and that's improving the capacity, helping us with better options and ultimately lowering those airfares," Mayor Huether said.
The mayor couldn't give me a timeline for these changes since it's up to the airlines to decide when, but he feel confident lower fares and more destinations are in our future.
