Shop owners talk Small Business Saturday

Posted: Updated:

There are special perks to shopping at a local business.

Brookings Fergen's Clothes and Shoes owner, Steve Kirkey said, "We know our customers we give them great customer service we extend out of the way to go ahead and do what we can to make them happy."

American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010 to remind people to shop local. Something the Kirkey, appreciates.

"That's why some of the smaller stores that are here are still here because we put a lot of time and effort in." Kirkey continued.

Shopping at local stores helps the local economy.

Brienne Maner with Downtown Sioux Falls said, "You're supporting that community directly, again those dollars, any dollars spent at a small business those money stay in that community and it makes it more unique and more vital."

Which helps keeps the community unique.

"So the more dollars that are spent, again, the more vital our community is and we really set ourselves apart." Maner explained.

One of Fergen's customers, Marilee Davis, actually prefers small stores to big ones.

She explained, "They're always over there trying to find the best something you're looking for they'll help you out and at big box stores you have to look for help they don't find you first."

Another reason is because she loves her community.

"I like people from Brookings.  They're more small town and they really care about the community and you want to help them." Davis continued.

Kirkey says he feels the same about his customers, "We're fortunate to have the good costumers that we have that keep following us throughout the year."
