One dead, one hospitalized in north west Sioux Falls shooting

Posted: Updated:

Police were called to a shooting in north west Sioux Falls around 3 pm Monday.

They say one person was found dead in the home and another was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

It happened in the 4200 block of North Alaska Avenue.

Officer Sam Clemens said police were, "trying to figure out what happened. That's the big key and there's not necessarily a time table for that. Obviously, we'll try to figure that out as soon as possible but it's going to take some time to figure out what led up to this and what actually transpired."

Clemens also stated no one is in custody for the shooting, "We don't know who's responsible for this or how many people are involved, so we're still working on gathering information and what happened."

The Tri-Valley superintendent said kids who live in Green Hills Addition, were bussed to the intersections of Alaska and Peacock Drives and officers escorted them home safely.

Neighbors said that was concerning, but the amount of police around put their minds at ease.

Jamie Miller lives just down the block and was at work when the shooting happened, a co-worker told her about it.

"She said ‘Um.. Well there was a shooting in your neighborhood,' and I was like "Ooh..' At that point I didn't know if we'd be able to get to our house or not." she said.

Miller moved in a couple months ago.

She says she never thought something like this would happen in her neighborhood.

"Just really surreal. I mean it's just surreal. There was a bus on Antelope. I think because they weren't able to bring the kids. Just scary. Especially because it's a family neighborhood. It's just scary."

Even though no one is in custody, police say the neighborhood is not in danger.

The police aren't releasing any names or ages at this time and are still trying to figure out their relations.

They did not have an official condition of the person taken to the hospital, but believe the person received life threatening injuries.
