A winter storm system will bring big changes to our weather over the next couple of days. Snow and blowing snow are likely today, tonight and tomorrow and will be followed by bitter, arctic cold temperatures. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for most of our area, including the city of Sioux Falls.

A rain/snow mix will change to snow this afternoon as temperatures drop back below freezing. Light snow will continue through tonight and into tomorrow. 2 to 5 inches of accumulation is expected in Sioux Falls and across the tri-state area with heavier amounts possible just north of Sioux Falls. Wind will be fairly light across the region today but will shift to the northwest and increase to 15-25 mph tonight. Gusts to 30 mph are likely from late tonight through tomorrow night, creating blowing snow at times especially in rural areas.

In Aberdeen, Watertown and Pierre: Snow has already developed across portions of central and northern South Dakota and will continue today, tonight and into tomorrow. Later this afternoon and tonight strong northwesterly wind gusts to 35 mph will create blowing and drifting snow reducing visibility significantly at times. 3-5 inches are possible in Pierre and Watertown, 5-7 inches are possible in Aberdeen.
