Gearing up for Snow

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday afternoon Sioux Falls was issued under a Winter Storm Warning active until midnight Wednesday.

So, have city snow crews adjusted their plans to reflect the latest forecast?

Sioux Falls streets manager Galynn Huber says his team changes their game plan based on the latest conditions.

Someone is working around the clock monitoring our weather to insure a fast reaction. The original plan was for a sanding operation using a moderate size crew working two 8 hour shifts to accomplish the mission. Now that the forecast calls for even more snow, Huber is calling for more workers. He estimates that around 100 city employees will be working on each 12 hour shift to get the job done. A snow alert will be declared if the city plans to plow all streets.

"Now we have to adapt and change. Now what we're going to do is bring in the big crew. We'll send out the motor grader, we'll send out the Sanders, we'll call in the contractors, we'll call a snow alert if we get 4 to 5 inches of snow," said Huber.

Huber says it might take his contractors 30 to 40 hours to clear the entire city. He also anticipates having to plow streets two or three times because of the wind blowing snow back onto the road.
