Fighting to keep downtown sidewalks clear

Posted: Updated:

The dreaded shoveling of snow -- and for business owners downtown, there's an even bigger incentive to get it done faster: customers!

But one business owner says the city isn't doing enough.

"On the  first major snowfall, it's really hard to get around downtown. The center of the streets are plowed but each of the intersections as you try to cross the street if you're a pedestrian is extremely difficult," said Linda Boyd, owner of Prairie Star Gallery.

The holiday season is a crucial time for ma and pa shops which make snow removal essential.

Downtown Sioux Falls knows the importance of this time. They help to remind business owners that they have 48 hours from when the snow stops to shovel.

"It's our job to be a catalyst for the, and the city of Sioux Falls does a great job at communicating, but we just go above and beyond to make sure that we're hitting our downtown members and business owners and making sure they get the information they need," said Brienne Maner, Downtown Sioux Falls Communications.

And of course the snow plows have been out in full force for this first major snow storm.

Downtown plowing will finish early Friday morning.

The Sioux Falls Street/Fleet Manager says the equipment is big so it doesn't always get into small areas.

"A lot of times what happens is we're downtown, we're pushing snow or picking snow up and sometimes that windrow, and especially towards those intersections areas, we don't get all that picked up. And I suppose that sloshy material is setting around the intersection. Our machines that go through and pick it up, they have big flaps on them and they usually work pretty well but sometimes they just don't get it all cleaned up like a vacuum cleaner type," said Galynn Huber, Sioux Falls Street/Fleet Manager.
