Some Sioux Falls homeowners seek snow gates after storm hits

Posted: Updated:

If you spent any time digging out your driveway Wednesday, you might have found an ice block at the end of it that's more like a road block.

The city has a solution for those blocked off driveways, but it's not in full use, just yet.

Teresa Stehly said it's no fun digging out your driveway after a snowstorm.

"It will be easier until the snow plow comes through and leaves that ridge of ice and debris in your driveway," Stehly said.

But a gadget called a snow gate could get rid of that. It blocks a plow from blocking your driveway. And Stehly championed an upcoming vote on getting them for the entire city.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to vote on these in April. And I think the 8,000 plus people who signed the petition are anxiously awaiting for that opportunity in the spring election," Stehly said.

These plow attachments could bring some relief to shovelers, but at a total cost around $200,000, they don't come cheap.

"I'm pleased that we're going to be voting on them and using them and I think it's going to be a fabulous use of tax dollars and the energy from the street department and our city," Stehly said.

And until voters decide if snow gates should come to everyone's neighborhood, Stehly will have to just keep on shoveling.

"It's time to get the driveway shoveled out before the snow plow comes by," Stehly said.

The Sioux Falls street department says crews will be out tonight getting some experience at working the controls to operate the snow gates for their first time.
