New charges have been filed against the Iowa woman accused of killing a toddler at her home day care, the Sioux City County Attorney said Thursday.
Rochelle Sapp, 33, of Orange City, Iowa, was charged with Murder in the First Degree, a class A felony, and Child Endangerment Resulting in Death, a class B felony, in the death of three-year-old Autumn Elgersma. Sapp is held in the Sioux County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond.
Elgersma suffered severe head trauma under Sapp's care. Elgersma was initially treated in Orange City, and later airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, where she died as a result of her injuries on Oct. 31.
Autopsy results determined Elgersma's death was a homicide.
The agencies involved in this investigation include the Orange City Police Department, the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office, the Sioux Falls Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
