Weather cancels outdoor portion of Christmas at the Dells

Posted: Updated:

Every year the streets of downtown Dell Rapids fill up to welcome the holidays with open arms.

But the recent blast of arctic air has forced organizers of Christmas at the Dells to make some changes.

"I don't remember a time that we had to cancel. We've been fortunate to host this every year. I can't think of a time we've had to cancel," organizer Dan Ahlers said.

Dan Ahlers says some have been disappointed but they know it's for the best.

"Everyone has been understanding and appreciative. We've had more appreciation for calling it, being responsible, looking out for the best interest of the community. We have so many other events going on this is just one part of our events this weekend," Ahlers said. "You hope everyone uses their better judgment but we definitely were wanting to make sure people would have something they enjoyed. To cancel that was in the best interest of everyone."

Despite the weather, indoor events will carry on in many stores and businesses downtown, including the Museum, as the economy will see its boost.

"It brings people in, shows people Dell Rapids and what we have to offer.  a lot of people don't realize it until they get up here and realize it to see Dell Rapids at its finest," business owner Katie Luttman said.

And people here know the city will be at its finest, no matter what.

"We'll have a really good time. This is a great example of what small town living is like. Everyone comes together. We may not be able to do everything but we'll have live music inside, fellowship, friends and a good family event," Ahlers said.

It is starting to warm up and spring has finally arrived, but with that, comes severe weather. This morning the tornado sirens were tested, but many in the Sioux Falls area did not hear them. The Emergency Manager for Sioux Falls said it was a communication problem. And other than that they are not exactly sure why it happened. We all know what the tornado siren means - potentially dangerous weather approaching. On Wednesday South Dakota had a state-wide test for when the storms roll through....More >>
