School under investigation for improper records handling

Posted: Updated:

National American University in Rapid City is investigating whether the disposal of some student financial records was handled properly.
The Rapid City Journal reports it obtained thousands of records including names, addresses and Social Security numbers that a member of the public took from a Dumpster and brought to the newspaper. No identity theft has been reported.
University attorney Thomas Johnson says the university's position is that the documents were properly handled during a recent move from one campus to another or that they should have been destroyed "in a secure manner" by a contractor hired by the university. Johnson says the university will be investigating whether a security breach occurred.
The federal U.S. attorney's office and the state attorney general's office have offered to take the documents.
