Deadwood businesses plagued by water line breaks

Posted: Updated:

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) - Main Street businesses in the western South Dakota gambling town of Deadwood continue to be plagued by water line breaks caused by days of subzero temperatures.

Six casinos and hotels experienced basement flooding after a water line break in an empty building Saturday released more than 100,000 gallons of water before being discovered hours later.

Two businesses had line breaks in their fire suppression systems on Monday. One business was closed and firefighters had to force their way in to contain the damage to that business. On Tuesday night, a gift shop filled with so much water that it spilled out the rear windows.

Fire Chief Bill Glover says a rash of water line breaks isn't common but also isn't surprising given the weather.
