It is a simple act of kindness gone viral. What started as an idea between two Sioux Falls middle school students is now warming hearts across the Sioux Empire.
They are two best friends, Damian Marlow and Mary Martinez, with one idea involving 800 Post-It notes. The girls took to the Axtell Park Middle School hallways, Wednesday, to spread some kind, inspirational words during a time when many needed it most.
"They got all the notes posted in that time frame before any kids arrived. It was a very big surprise to the students and the staff," Axtell Park Principal LaVonna Emanuel said.
Principal LaVonna Emanuel has never seen anything like it.
"I expected the notes to say 'you're cool,' or just a couple of words but these girls went to great lengths. There was poetry, inspirational sayings that were quite lengthy, written neatly on the sticky notes. They not only did the world but it was done immaculately in great detail," Emanuel said.
"Some people they don't get compliments at all and they just feel as if they're worthless and we wanted to make them feel like they're worth something because they are," Mary Martinez Smith said.
A simple idea they had simply to make someone smile. And it worked.
"Amazing (they laughed), just seeing everyone's reactions. It felt so good. It was so simple, you can just tell it wasn't simple from their point of view," they said.
It even left teachers stunned.
"It takes a lot for me to become emotional. When I went out and read those post-it notes, I was brought to tears. I would walk away and look again, I kept crying. It was very emotional me," Emanuel said.
If at least one person's day was made a little brighter by this project, mission accomplished.
"Very pleased to be the principal of those two students. I'm so thankful they're at Axtell Park," Emanuel said.
The girls said it took them several hours a day for more than a week to complete all 800 Post-It notes for each of the 800 lockers at the middle school.
