Some Sioux Falls middle school students are working on a project that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy... inside and out.
They're making blankets...they will be distributed to students all across the Sioux Empire...as a way to help keep them warm during winter's chill.
It may sound simple on the surface...kids using fleece...a lot of fleece...to make what are called "tie blankets". But it's not the process that gets the attention, though it is impressive What gets the attention is the good this program is doing.
"Over the course of the last 7 years we've made 6,500 blankets...just over that....that we've distributed to area students in need." Tracy Vik is the assistant principal at Edison Middle School. She has overseen "Project Warm-Up" for all 8 years that it has been in existence. "The first year it was my husband and I and 20 high school students. Last year we had over 450 people come on the day and actually make blankets with us."
This was a day for making blankets at Edison. Student Avery Scott told us....give she and her friends some fleece....and they'll crank out the blankets. "My group is pretty awesome so maybe like...15 minutes."
But the reason behind this blanket making party is not lost on any of the kids here. Student Liberty Justus says doing this....is not only good for the hands....but it is also very good for the heart. "A lot of kids don't really get that much for Christmas. So we're just making sure that they get the things that they need."
And these warm hearts know their work....will keep others warm.....during what has already been a very cold winter.
If you're saying to yourself that this is something you would like to do, you're in luck.
There is going to be a community wide blanket making party this coming Saturday at Edison Middle School.....2101 South West Avenue...from 11 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon.
