Local student remembers Mandela

Posted: Updated:

Prosper Zongo grew up in West Africa

He came to Sioux Falls in 2011 and is now a college student at Augustana.

Nelson Mandela played a huge role in his life.

"The reason I want to study politics is because I saw the great example of Mandela." said Zongo.

Zongo found out about Mandela's passing from a friend.

"We all know a human being is made to die, but someone like this, I know it is not possible, but I wish he could just be there." He said.

He said he was surprised by how much people in Sioux Falls, and around the country, cared.

"He's from Africa, and he is known in many other countries I was really amazed how much attention American people gave to when he passed away."

Mandela was a force of good leadership, and Zongo is afraid his death may lead to more corruption in Africa.

"Because he was there, the leaders, there were some actions they couldn't take. Some corruption, some rigging elections, that they would avoid because this guy was there." Zongo continued.

Zongo has high hopes to follow Mandela's lead and even become president of his country, one day.

"I have a lot of dreams to go back and help my country and go back to help Africa because the leaders are not doing what they are supposed to be doing." Zongo said.
