Driver charged with DWI crashes into liquor aisle of a Sioux Falls Shop-N-Cart

Posted: Updated:

The owner of a Sioux Falls Shop-N-Cart told us he now has a drive-through window, thanks to a car crashing into his store last night.

And considering how much damage there was, he's surprisingly upbeat.

But he tells us he's just glad no one was hurt.

He also tells us he's seen this before.

This is the fourth time this year a car came crashing through his store.

Employees at this Shop-N-Cart have had their fair share of picking up pieces broken glass.

Owner Dave Grevlos said "everybody has their share but this is kind of turning into... this building's been hit five times in the last three years. so, I don't know, that's really bad luck."

Store surveillance video showed a Mitsubishi Outlander turned this convenience store into a drive-through just before midnight.

"Same spot, same thing. It knocked... took out the two front panes of glass, and knocked down our whole liquor section, pretty much the whole thing," Grevlos said.

As crews take away the car in question, police arrest the driver. He's charged with his first DWI.

But what can Grevlos do to prevent another accident like this?

"You really can't tell people not to run into somebody's building, they pretty much know that , so no, it's unavoidable on our part. nothing we can do," Grevlos said.

All he can do for now is to fix the hole in the wall of his store.

"We're trying to get some tarps up here, just to keep the cold out," Grevlos said.

Cleaning up this mess is not going to come cheap.

"Last time, I think it was close to $20,000, this is going to be worse, the whole frame foundation has been compromised now on the front of the building. So we won't know for a while. I really haven't seen it that close yet, but this is probably the worst one I've seen for a while," Grevlos said.

A manager at the store told us they have the heater cranked up to keep the store warm, without a front window.

So besides the costs of the repairs, they may find themselves with an expensive heating bill this winter.
