Pressler says he's running for U.S. Senate as an Independent

Posted: Updated:

Former Senator Larry Pressler says he wants to return to Capitol Hill.

Thursday, the former Republican announced during a news conference in Sioux Falls that he will run as an Independent candidate for the U.S. Senate.

The former Republican served two terms in the U.S. House and three terms in the U.S. Senate.  Last week, he officially changed his party registration from Republican to Independent.

Pressler joins an already crowded field of candidates.  The list includes Republicans Mike Rounds, Larry Rhoden, Annette Bosworth, Stace Nelson, and Jason Ravnsborg.  Rick Weiland is the only Democrat who has announced his intentions to run.

Pressler is also holding news conferences Friday in Watertown and Aberdeen.
