SD has 6th fastest growing population

Posted: Updated:

In July, Kurt Griffin moved to South Dakota from Arizona for work.

"Sioux Falls as a slightly smaller city is very comfortable. It's easy to get around, the people have been very friendly." He said.

According the new US Census, he and his wife are just two of many.

"It's been for us a very comfortable place and obviously an attractive option for us to come here." Griffin added.

It says South Dakota has the 6th fastest growing population in the nation.

The boom is something President of the Realtor Association of the Sioux Empire, Brandon Martens, can see first hand.

"Obviously there's no state income tax, which helps a lot of businesses and a lot of the people coming to the area. As well as land costs, the fact that we really did not have a housing bubble, we just kind of weathered the storm and I think that really attracted people to South Dakota."

Griffin says he feels comfortable here, and Martens thinks that's a big reason why people are coming.

"There's consumer certainty with South Dakota because people are really feeling like it's safe. Not just in regards to their investments, but also the cost of living and the school systems, everything." said Martens.

South Dakota's population grew by 3.5% in the past three years.

That beats the nation's average of 2.2%.

"It's a fantastic sign. We're seeing more houses being built. Obviously there is always a need, there are buyers in the market looking right now and it's just time to go." Said Martens.
