Getting home safe on New Year's Eve

Posted: Updated:

New Year's Eve is the night of all nights for celebrating.

"New Year's Eve a lot of people go out earlier, they stay out later. A lot of people use cabs and other means of getting home." Said owner of 1st Choice Taxis, Tom Werner.

He said it's his busiest night of the year.

"Last year we did approximately the same amount of volume that we would have for a whole weekend in one night. This year we're expecting to do nearly two-and-a-half times our normal weekend volume in one evening."

He's running from dusk til dawn for this party and has about 10 drivers getting people home safely.

If the cost of a cab ride is what's stopping you, think of this,

"If you consider the average cost of a first time DUI in the state of South Dakota you could pay for over 500 cab rides." Werner said.

But, a free option would be a trip with Tipsy Tow.

"All a person needs to do if they need a ride home is to call AAA-help and ask for a Tipsy Tow and the tow truck driver will come and pick you up and another passenger and your vehicle home." explained Marilyn Buskohl of AAA.

You don't even need to be a AAA member to use this free service.

"Our main motivation is just to keep people safe and we just don't want to see accidents." She said.

So after your celebrating tonight, make sure you consider all your options.

"We know that people are out socializing and drinking we just want to keep people safe and keep those who aren't drinking safe as well. You pose a danger not only to yourself, but anyone riding with you but people who are just on the highway." Buskohl said.
