Dakotas govs leave school closings up to districts

Posted: Updated:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Minnesota's governor called off all public school classes Monday because of the expected cold blast, but governors in the Dakotas will let superintendents make the call.

Gov. Mark Dayton says the safety of Minnesota's school children is the state's first priority. He says all Minnesotans should be cautious about the weather in the coming days.

A spokesman for South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard told KCCR-AM the decision is usually made by individual districts, and temperatures can vary widely throughout the state.

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple's office says he urged superintendents to keep student safety in mind when deciding whether to call of school.
