Dangerously cold weather blankets the Dakotas

Posted: Updated:

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - A lot of school children had the day off, but most people in the Dakotas went about business as usual Monday, despite subzero wind chills.

Brandon Schmidt of Jim's Towing in West Fargo had icicles in his mustache and beard as hooked up a delivery truck that wouldn't start. His company began towing vehicles at 3 a.m. Monday and there was no end in sight.

In Sioux Falls, S.D., courier Mike Jesse needed gas before driving his route, but the north-facing pumps wouldn't work, so he moved around to the south side.

Also, in southeast South Dakota, the Turner County Courthouse in Parker, S.D., had to close because of a natural gas problem.

And in Minot, a stray cat that was frozen to a rock was rescued but ultimately died.
