Alexandria home destroyed by fire

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: A home nine miles north of Alexandria was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.

According to Hanson County Emergency Management, the Alexandria Fire Department was dispatched to the home around 8:40 p.m. By the time emergency crews arrived on scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

State Representative and U.S. Senate candidate Stace Nelson confirms that the house belongs to his brother, Doug Nelson. The family was at a basketball game when they received the call.

A KSFY News crew approached the fire just after 10:00 p.m. and the flames were still visible from Interstate 90, roughly 10 miles away.

Neighbors on scene tell KSFY News they saw the flames and called 911. The nearest neighbor is about a mile from Nelson's house.

No one was injured in the fire, but the home is at a total loss.

Fire crews were battling freezing temperatures while trying to put out the fire.

"Its just really cold and the cold and the water just don't mix...there was one or two of the trucks that were freezing. They got them going but they were starting to freeze when they got here," said Hanson County Emergency Manager Kevin Kayser.

Kayser said trucks had to refill water twice while battling the fire that lasted nearly two and a half hours.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
