Family trying to move forward after mobile home fire

Posted: Updated:

An update on a story we first brought you on Wednesday night.

A Sioux Falls family is working to rebuild their lives after a devastating fire. It happened at the Pine Meadow Mobile Home Park -- that's in west Sioux Falls near Hayward Elementary School.

When fire crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames shooting from the home.

Charles Kress tells us the family spread quickly but his family was able to get out safely.

Tonight, the Kress family is living in a motel.

"Our kids' baby books were in there.  I mean because there's stuff you can replace but stuff like that is heartbreaking because they are things you want to give to your children. That's why you make them," said Megan Kress.

Megan and Charles Kress have four children. They were staying at the now charred mobile home with Charles' parents until they got back on their feet.

This was just another setback for their family.

"It's just hard because my husband just started his job and we're just getting on our feet. I'm not working and I was going to start working after the long break but now you can't even get hired because you have to have your ID and two forms and I don't even have mail to show I live in Sioux Falls," said Megan.

The Red Cross will pay for the Kress family to stay in a motel until Tuesday. After that the family has no place to go.

"We want to make sure they're happy and not stressed out and scared. We want those emotions. We don't want them to feel any of it," said Megan.

There is a glimpse of hope. KSFY received word that someone who wishes to remain anonymous has set up a fund for the Kress Family.

We broke the news to Megan and Charles this afternoon.

"When you said that, my heart literally just stopped and I felt this lump in my throat. There's hope. There's hope and it just brings you to another level -- just keep going up," said Megan.

If you would like to help the Kress family get back on their feet, two separate funds have been set up. Donations are being accepted at Wells Fargo locations and another fund has been set up specifically for Charles and Megan at TCF Bank.
