DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines Water Works says it's received a record number of water main breaks during recent extreme frigid weather.
The utility says about 30 main breaks were reported within a recent seven-day period. Officials say they have an average of 300 main breaks annually, and half occur during winter months.
A pilot automated system between the utility and Polk County Emergency Management aims to alert customers of water outages, boil water orders and other public health notifications. Des Moines Water Works customers must have a current phone number on file.
