Numerous events in Sioux Falls mark MLK Day

Posted: Updated:

Nationwide...in varied ways...people stopped what they were doing to remember Martin Luther King Junior on this holiday.

Today at First Reformed Church, we caught up with these kids in the Lutheran Social Services after school program, who were making dog bones and fleece blankets to donate to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. They also made treat bags for Sioux Falls snow plow drivers who have been a little busy as of late.

The Banquet in Sioux Falls was using this Martin Luther King Junior holiday as a way to specifically collect items for the women it serves; items which can be cost prohibitive if money is tight.

The idea was brought to light by a woman who approached The Banquet needing help. She had what she needed for her baby but nothing for herself.

At Augustana College tonight, a special ceremony featuring videos made by Sioux Falls middle and high school students about how the lessons of Doctor King's mission effects their lives today. Chelle Nemec with Siouxland RSVP tell us, "Not only his mission of equality and driving down racism and discrimination but also his legacy of service and giving back through serving your community and your neighbor."

Part of that Augustana College program tonight featured Warren Bowles performing part of the theater show "Doctor King's Dream".
