Next generation of farmers

Posted: Updated:

The lack of a farm bill is making a stressful job, even worse.

But it is one farmers are so passionate about, they still recommend it to everyone.

"There's something to be said about seeing your hard work pay off. When you go to a show like the Sioux Empire and you see kids having a lot of fun with their show steer or their show pig." said farmer John Weinheimer.

He added the biggest reason he wants kids to farm is because their job impacts everyone.

"Just to know that without us the country would really struggle because they really need us, not only for food, but for fuel, so many things. We mean so much to small town America."

Nineteen-year-old Zack Lear shows pigs, and said he wouldn't choose any other career, "In all honesty, our goal is to feed an ever growing world and if we don't keep going with our farming practices where are we going to be in 10 years."

Lear said his peers are the producers of tomorrow.

Some may get overwhelmed by the price tag to get in, but the amount isn't what matters.

"People look at the big picture and they think 'Oh wow, how am I going to invest in 100,000 acres.' You don't have to invest in that, you can invest in five acres and take it to your local co-op and you're still helping with the mass quantities to feed the world. So one little acre can do a lot for a lot of families." He said.
