Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week: Tory Makela

Posted: Updated:

Tonight's Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Tory Makela from Ipswich High School.

It's common to see our scholars maintain perfect 4.0 grade point averages.

Tory is doing that and then some. She has one of the highest grade point averages we've seen.

So how in the world does Tory Makela maintain a grade point average of 4.24?
Well for starters, she is taking two Advanced Placement classes and those weighted grades pushed Tory about the 4.0 level....and kept her there. "I'm doing AP Statistics and then AP US History. That way I can take the AP test in May and hopefully get college credit for them and get those out of the way."

But beyond that, Tory says to get and keep a 4.24 requires a lot of discipline and some sacrifice. Tory says it is more than worth it. "I have ambitions. I want to do well in school. It's something I care about so you have to prioritize that over..I still have a social life...but sometimes you have to prioritize over that."

A large part of Tory's success boils down to her attitude.
She wants to do well in class while enjoying life at the same time.
Her business teacher Lynette Heitz tells us, that's easy to see with Tory. "Tory is an excellent student to have in class. In fact I like seeing Tory walk through my doorway because I can always count on her to have a smile on her face and I have not seen Tory in a bad mood. It's just a pleasure to have her walk in."

Tory has been accepted to two colleges: Drake University in Iowa and Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.
Her initial plans you might imagine...some hard work...and some fun. "I am going to major in biology and I also want to...I don't know if I am going to minor in dance or just take dance classes." And after that, Tory says it will be onto medical school to pursue a profession in the medical field.

For being named our Scholar of the Week, Tory will receive a $100 scholarship from FEM Electric Association, which is a local Touchstone Energy cooperative.
