Sioux Area Metro announces expanded routes

Posted: Updated:

The Sioux Area Metro, better known as SAM, has plans to expand is routes. With an increase in Sioux Falls' population, more people are using public transportation.

"The town has grown, but the bus system hasn't grown and changed with the town," says Timmy Brooks, a loyal SAM rider. Brooks has to ride the transit every day, and he has had some issues with the system.

"The first bus I was on first was running late, so I missed my bus. Now I have to wait an hour downtown to catch another bus, and my appointment was an hour ago," Brooks said.

SAM hopes to help eliminate bus delays by slightly changing routes to make them more efficient. Buses will also stop at specific locations more often. The proposed routes being affected by weekday service expansion are 7, 8 and 19.

Five routes, will now get two extra hours of evening service, and riders will see additions to existing routes. Riders can now take the bus all the way north of West Benson Rd.

The sole reason for the change is to make the routes more reliable and keep people from waiting out in the cold for so long.

Sam Trebilcock is the planner of the new routes. "We are certainly trying to make some expansions to service where it is needed and to make some adjustments to make sure the bus is running on time," he said.

He is holding a public hearing on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 3:45 p.m. in the City Hall Commission Room to receive any comments, ideas and concerns from citizens.
