Pavilion Spotlight: Mark Morris Dance Group teaches area students

Posted: Updated:

Graceful and effortless, they sail across the stage. The internationally known and esteemed Mark Morris Dance Group makes it look so easy.

The group will take the Washington Pavilion's stage this Friday and Saturday. Before that, they're making quite the impression on the fourth graders at Lowell Elementary.

"It's interesting to see. They're eager to learn choreography, and they like learning something with structure and being able to perform a dance. The challenge sometimes is getting someone who has never moved their body in a creative way or just perform for other people to use their imagination and move without being self conscious," said professional dancer Aaron Loux.

For many of these youngsters, this is the first time they've interacted with such talented dancers.

"To give them the opportunity to see professional dancers, to learn about their work, to explore dance themselves, which is something a lot of them don't get the opportunity to do," said Rose Ann Hofland, the Washington Pavilion's Director of the Community Learning Center.

A state-wide initiative called "South Dakota Dance On" helped make this experience happen. Bringing dance into communities is the objective, and as you can see both the dancers and the students had fun.

"Seeing dance when I was young made a really big impression on me, and it's what started my passion for it," said Loux. "It's rewarding to create experiences like that for other people."
