South Dakota lawmakers examine domestic abuse laws

Posted: Updated:

South Dakota lawmakers are looking at a proposal that would expand South Dakota's domestic abuse laws to cover dating couples who don't live together.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing Tuesday on a package of bills recommended by a legislative study committee that met last summer.
Current law defines domestic abuse as physical harm, attempted harm or the infliction of fear of harm between spouses, former spouses, some relatives, people who live or have lived in the same household or people who have a child together.
One proposal would broaden the coverage to people who are in or have been in a significant romantic relationship with each other.
Other proposals are aimed at protecting children of abuse victims.
