Panel debates extending SD lawmakers' term limits

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota lawmakers are considering a proposal that would lengthen term limits for members of the state Legislature.

A Senate or House member currently can serve no more than eight consecutive years, or four two-year terms, in a chamber.

A proposed constitutional amendment would extend term limits to 12 consecutive years in a chamber, or six two-year terms. If the Legislature passes the measure, voters in the November election would be asked to change the South Dakota to allow the extended term limits.

The House State Affairs is scheduled to debate the measure Friday.
