Man gets prison for running Waterloo drug ring

Posted: Updated:

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A 37-year-old man from Chicago has been given more than 27 years in federal prison for running a drug ring in Waterloo.

Prosecutors say Dwayne Appling was sentenced on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids. Appling must serve 10 years of supervised release after he leaves prison. He'd pleaded guilty in August to two drug charges.

Prosecutors say that between 2007 and March 2010, Appling and his accomplices distributed heroin throughout the Waterloo area. Prosecutors say Appling's organization involved more than 30 people.

Court records say Appling left Waterloo when questioned after drug raids in March 2010. He was arrested in November 2012 in South Dakota, living under another name.
