Appointed legislators make vacated seats their own
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard appointed an unusually high number of legislators in the last year to fill vacated seats in the House and Senate.
Four of the five appointees are freshmen lawmakers, serving in their first session. All are Republicans.
Sen. Alan Solano, R-Rapid City, had only a day between the announcement of his appointment and the start of the session.
The other freshmen include Rep. Kris Langer, of Dell Rapids; Sen. Chuck Jones, of Flandreau; and Rep. David Anderson, of Hudson. Only Sen. Blake Curd, of Sioux Falls, has served in the Legislature before.
All five say they've taken their interests and professions outside the Capitol into their consideration as lawmakers. And each plans to campaign to maintain his or her current seats.
