Farm Bill to include COOL

Posted: Updated:

Parker's Bistro owner, Stacy Newcomb-Weiland, tries to buy local meat, "We very carefully source our foods and go with local sources anytime we can and always know the practices of the place where we buy our food from." She said.

Country of Origin Labeling included in the Farm Bill will make it all the easier.

"We have an advantage in that we can do that research. We know where we're going to source our foods, we can look it up and we can talk to the people that are actually producing the foods that we serve. So, that's a lot more a part of the natural process for us." Newcomb-Weiland added.

It will particularly benefit people not in the restaurant business.

"I think it does affect people who are just going into grocery stores. When in the past they haven't been able to tell a lot about it and now, this will give them a lot more information and they can choose to use that product or not based on the information that's on the label." She said.

But Newcomb-Weiland said the labeling will also push producers to higher quality standards, "If your name is on that package and it can be traced easily to whoever it is, I think it makes everyone accountable."

She added food safety will really benefit from labeling where meat was born, raised, slaughtered and processed.

"If your product has been traced to a problem, then obviously, that's going to be devastating for your business. So I think it'll make people really be more careful."

The White House said President Obama is planning to sign the bill Friday in Michigan.
