Aberdeen receives $2 millon grant

Posted: Updated:

A new Career and Technical Education (CTE) facility is planned for Aberdeen Central High School.  Thanks to a $2 million grant from the state government, it can now be funded.

"We're just really excited to have the opportunity to have some funding to move the project forward," said Aberdeen's assistant superintendent Becky Guffin.

The Aberdeen School District were given short notice on the details of the grant, so they are still fine tuning the specifics. They do know that the building will house CTE courses that have been modified from what the school offers now.

"Society has changed, the needs of the workforce has changed and we want to make sure we are keeping up to pace with that," Guffin said.

The classes will focus on students' career paths. They will try to match as close as possible to students' interests. To ensure the courses will be what students want, for the remainder of this year, the school district will be evaluating current courses. They will also be taking feedback from students to decide what classes will be offered in the new building.

Construction on the project could start as early as next winter, but several details still need to determined.
