A Sioux Falls middle school had empty classrooms Thursday after a water main break forced students and teachers to stay home. While the building will reopen for classes, Friday, a mother and daughter took the opportunity to focus on, and enjoy, the day.
"One minute I'm getting my first daughter off to elementary school, missed a phone call and my daughter said there was no school. Saw the banner on the bottom for the TV screen and saw Edison was closed because of a water main break," parent Jayme Nelson said.
A broken water main brought a lot of flooding and required immediate shutdown to utilities and even the internet.
"It surprised me, totally surprised me. Didn't see that coming at all," Emma Nelson said.
They saw for themselves during an afternoon drive by the school.
"There was ice everywhere. There was big machinery, like they were digging up the ground. They were working fast but it was a mess," Emma said.
"With however many students there, you probably need to have flushing toilets. I think it was a good call. Excited to have a freed ay and one we wouldn't have to make up," Jayme said.
What should have been another school day turned into an impromptu day together.
"My mom and I are close so we don't get to hang out a lot because we're both really busy but we just got to hang out today and it was fun," Emma Nelson said.
