Crews extinguish house fire in central Sioux Falls Thursday night

Posted: Updated:

Cold temperatures and an unusual construction design made a central Sioux Falls house fire hard to put out Thursday night.
Smoke was coming out of the attic area of the house, located at 520 S. Elmwood Ave., when Sioux Falls Fire Rescue first reached the scene at 9:11 p.m.
According to Battalion Chief Travis Thom, the fire took about an hour and a half to completely extinguish.
He said frigid temperatures slowed down crews, as did the design of the house. The attic was split into different sections, making the fire hard to isolate.
Thom said the house was unoccupied, but crews did evacuate the neighboring homes while they fought the fire.
No one was hurt in the fire, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
Nobody was hurt in the fire.
