Local vendors take a hit after Co-Op fire

Posted: Updated:

The Co-Op Natural Foods is in recovery mode after a fire in January that destroyed the building and everything inside.

That has hurt not only its several hundred members but the vendors who make a profit selling their products at the Co-Op.

David Napolitano owns Breadico de Napolitano baking fresh artisan bread for a number of local businesses including the Co-Op Natural Foods.

The January 19th fire has forced him, and other vendors, to halt business with the Co-Op just as he neared his one year anniversary.

"After I started going through it, I thought about the employees and all they do everyday. I thought to myself that's devastating for everyone who can't go to work," David Napolitano said.

He sells at a few other stores in town including Josiah's Coffee House, Pomegranate Market and Cleaver's Meat Market. The Co-Op was one of his best.

"I miss being able to take my product to my customers' favorite stores. I miss seeing all of them. Sales have definitely taken a hit. With it being January, it's more cold and this time of year, is kind of a strain for me as a small vendor and other vendors," Napolitano said.

With a temporary spot on the way at 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue, Napolitano is happy to see things moving forward.

"I'm seeing pictures of them working in the space, tearing up the carpet. What I like most is they seem to be enjoying it. It's encouraging for me too to have that outlet and family back," he said.

Napolitano is in the process of opening his own place at the old Queen City Bakery location in downtown Sioux Falls.

The following is a statement from the Co-Op team on their many local vendors:

"Our local vendors help make the Co-op unique. People come from near and far for their quality products; they enhance the local economy and provide good jobs. We are proud to provide them a place to sell their goods." - The Co-op
