Irene remembers it's mayor who was killed in car accident, Friday night

Irene is a place where, the people who live here say everybody knows everyone. And now the town has lost one of it's most beloved and favorite sons.

City council member Joseph Booth says Mayor Lloyd Mork, helped the city prosper.

"He's been a part of every forward-looking thing that we've done, one of the things that we did over the last six years or so is that we found a way to fund an economic development corporation, and Lloyd was a big supporter of that," Booth said.

And former Irene School superintendent Larry Johnke considers the late mayor a long time friend.

"He took his job as mayor here very seriously when they moved to town," Johnke said.

Mayor Lloyd Mork will be remembered fondly, not only by those who knew him but the town he served.

"We'd have a few drinks together once in a while and he was always willing to help," Johnke said.

"We're all just devastated. I don't even know a better word to describe it than that," Booth said.

"Those were the good times. Just Lloyd being himself and wanting to be friends with everybody he knew," Johnke added.

"You don't fill Lloyd's shoes, you just hope to try and do as good as job as he did. He was a great mayor. Great mayor. Great friend," Booth added.

Irene will soon have a new mayor here at City Hall, but many say the man who held that position is irreplaceable.

Booth said the city council president will assume the duties of mayor. Irene council members will meet Monday night to decide how the city will move forward.
