In the brunt of this cold, winter season, one USD diver is making waves in the Summit League.
Freshman Greysen Hertting has won 9 of the 12 Summit League Diver of the Week awards this year and continues to dominate week in and week out. Coach Jason Mahowald seems to have struck gold in this recruit.
"She's a coaches dream, 9 Summit League diver of the week honors, and she's a 4.0 student really kind of no worries on that end with her so we are really lucky to have her," USD Dive Coach, Jason Mahowald said.
Although the honors were unexpected so quickly, the freshman is glad her hard work is getting recognized.
"It's super exciting, I did not expect it at all its a welcome surprise," Herrting mentioned. "It's kind of nice to have the recognition for all the work and training that you do."
In the pool, Herrting says repetition is key. So to get some new tricks, she studies her competition
You watch them and you kind of compare yourself to them, they look good I should try that....it's a lesson...try to follow them.
As with any sport, diving can always be dangerous. So what happens after a bad dive.
You definitely can't stop on a bad one, you always have to move past that and not do it again, because it hurts and it's not fun.
While the honors are nice, coach Mahowald is looking at the much larger picture for his star diver.
"We've got more goals than just the Summit League honors we want to perform well at the championships in two weeks and down the line we want her to qualify for NCAA championships so it's not just a weekly honor thing, those things are great but we have bigger goals for her down the line".
