Feeding South Dakota's BackPack Program

Posted: Updated:

Instead of buying chocolates, flowers and perfume for your Valentine, why not help hungry kids right here in our community?

One Sioux Falls organization is suggesting just that.

Feeding South Dakota has a fundraiser going on right now.

Donate $75 and feed a hungry child for an entire semester.

And your loved one gets a flower and a Valentine's Day card designed by a child.

The food goes to kids whose families cannot afford to feed them over the weekend.

It is supposed to fill the gap from Friday's school lunch to Monday's school breakfast.

40-50 volunteers come in every week of the school year to fill backpacks.

Last weekend they handed out over 3,000.

The backpacks go to kids in Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities.

They have given 200 more food back packs this February compared to last February.

"I think this is just another effort to raise awareness and raise funds for the backpack program. These are kids who don't have enough to eat on the weekends. So our goal is to send food home with them, so when they come to school Monday morning, they're prepared and ready to learn when they're in the classroom." Said BackPack Program Coordinator, Allison Struck.

To donate, you can go to their website.

Feeding South Dakota would like to get all orders in by noon tomorrow.

The BackPack Program started in 2007 and they handed out 200 bags.

Today, they give out 3,600 backpacks.
