It's one of the largest recalls of its kind -- Graco recalls more than 3 million child car seats.
Faulty buckles that can stick make it tough to free a child in an emergency.
Customers are being offered 'new and improved harness buckles' at no cost.
Wednesday, we met a local woman who knows just how important a safe car seat can be.
It was January 3 -- Rebecca Barefoot was driving down I-90 with her two little ones in the back seat. She put on her blinker to change lanes when she hit a patch of ice sending her truck spinning into the median.
The first thing on her mind were if her kids were okay.
"As we started tumbling, I remember the first thought was I want to hear my boys cry. If I can just hear my boys crying, I know they're okay. I heard the one-year-old crying and then we came to a rest. The two-year-old just said in a very surprised voice 'Mama get stuck?' 'Yes baby, Mama got really stuck'," said Barefoot.
Barefoot was able to climb into the backseat of the totaled truck. Both sons -- without a scratch.
She says it could have been a very different outcome if she hadn't had both car seats properly installed by Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.
"They were not in seats that they needed to be in prior to coming here. From the way the way back window busted and I know that their heads would have been more exposed, their bodies would have been more exposed and the seats probably were not installed the way they should have been installed," said Barefoot.
Cpt. Grant Van Riesen says an improperly installed car seat is sometimes more dangerous than not having one at all.
"If you bring your child to a Dr. checkup or yearly checkup, you do that to prevent illness or to make sure they're healthy. I look at this as the same thing -- going and getting that car seat taken in for a checkup, make sure it's properly installed properly," said Van Riesen.
"So much gratitude. So much gratitude because to me, they are the reason my children are still here running around like little minions," said Barefoot.
Sioux Falls Rescue provides car seat installation and checks every Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Fire Station 3. That's at 2820 Minnesota Ave.
